Placement with Barney from Woodwork for Wellbeing
This placement took place in September 2023
About Woodwork for Wellbeing:
We work to improve wellbeing through woodwork. We run various relaxed and open social woodwork sessions within the community, aimed at helping people with mental health issues, reducing isolation and improving wellbeing through making and learning together.
Evidence of working on a coffee table project
My work with Barney involved design, safety, research, sketching, responding to feedback and evaluation.
Prototype Table
Made with cardboard and chipboard

Evidence of working on an upcycling project
The school had a pallet lying around and I thought it would be cool to put together a bench that would be simple enough but looked nice out of wasted wood. It’s joined together mostly by screws unless they were already joined together. The wooden picture is the original time I finished it and then later on I sanded it down to remove splinters and painted in the white overcoat. Then added the Roman numerals as an interesting kind of design
Evidence of working on canvas art and a mitred frame
Hi Melanie, here are some paintings Owen has developed to produce a final piece on canvas. He also made the frame with mitre joints.

Feedback from Barney
Owen has successfully and accurately made a well-designed coffee table, bench and frame. Owen has completed the majority of the work independently and has worked methodically to produce well-finished and stylish pieces. Owen has accurately joined the table top and shelf with biscuit joints and the legs with dowel joints. The dowel joints especially require a high level of accuracy, precision measuring and marking out to be successful. Owen would benefit from bringing his glasses to make this kind of activity easier for him. Owen has applied several coatings of wax which offers some protection and enhances the grain. This again was completed to a good standard, where the wax was evenly applied and rubbed in properly. Owen is able to work on his own but enjoys the company of others. Owen is well-mannered and often brings entertaining anecdotes to the workshop.

Reflection on the Placement
I think the pallet-wood bench enhanced my decorating style of painting and my knowledge of workplace timings but also the type of intensity projects need to be constructed in a mannerly time. It was a great recycling project but I also learned the frailties and imperfections that usually come with pallet wood.
The coffee-style table I think helped develop my mechanical skills of cutting pieces accurately but also joining pieces using varied methods and to the correct standard expected of the table top being level and joints being square in this project. Drawing the isometric sketch and creating a prototype using materials such as cardboard and bamboo also showed me what might be done in a professional setting.
The acrylic painted canvas project introduced me to mitre joints creating the hardwood frame. It also put me in an uncomfortable position of painting the canvas independently when I doubt my artistic abilities (especially painting) but feel like the project was ok but I critique my skills heavily in the painting sector.
