My current art form: Game Design
My new art form: Digital art, graphic design and colour theory
I will create a platform video game using Gdevelop and learn digital skills and colour theory along the way.
Strengths
I am a drummer so have good sense of rhythm
I am good at picking up new skills
I like making challenges for other people like games and quizzes
Weaknesses
I am not great with technology and have never used GDevelop before
I enjoy drawing but I have never done digital drawing before
My project plan
To collect research I will:
- Play other platform games
- Research sprite designs
- Find out what makes a good platform game
- Talk to others about what they like about platform games
To plan, practise, and prepare for my project I will:
- Learn graphic design skills with Melanie
- Practice digital drawing
- Practice Colour Theory
- Improve my skills in software like Gdevelop
To create my project I will:
- Create a level using Gdevelop
- Add backgrounds and platforms
- Use graphic design and colour theory to make the game look appealing
- List
To evaluate the success of my project I will:
- Let others play my game and ask for their feedback
- Discuss the project with Melanie
- Set a list of criteria for what makes a good platform game and check if my game meets these
- Share my game on my Unit 2 website
How my project will use my strengths
I will think about the rhythm of the game and make sure that timings has something to do with how you succeed. I will try out new skills and practice them. I will make a challenging game that will drive people crazy and be hard to beat.
How my project will develop my weaknesses
I will get lots of chance to practice with technology, especially as my lessons are online. I will have the chance to practice digital drawing and think about what colours makes something look good.
Evidence of Progress: Developing Graphic Design Skills
Before I decided to make my game, I did some practice using other digital art techniques.
Learning to use Canva by making a movie poster and magazine cover

Practice Project Using Studio Lights and photo editing with adviser Melanie who is also a professional photographer.

Creating a movie poster

Melanie’s comment
You did very well setting up the lights and directing them towards the subject. You had a good sense of what to do although I know that you found the camera challenging. I’d like to focus on this with you if we use the lights again. Your poster is great though. I love how you made the background blue to tie this in with the paler blues in the image. The blood and gore is a good contrast to the cuddly shark.

Preparing for the New Work: Colour Theory
In order to improve the look of the game I learned colour theory
Complementary Colours
My coat
My coat would look good with a blue jumper. Complementary colours are opposite each other on the colour wheel.
I could use a square pattern to get the best colours for the sprites. Or a mix of complementary colours.
My original colours
Skin colour: da973d
Complementary T-Shirt: #3D80DA
Shorts colour: #e33b37
Complementary trainers: #37DFE3
Colours updated with colour theory
The original zombie drawing
Zombie Skin: 88d67d
Square colours for the zombie:
#7193E2
##7193E2
#E2C071 (for the base of the black)
Colour corrected zombie with the square colours.
Final Sprites
The background
I also used what I’d learned to update the background and platform colours
Original background
Platform doesn’t really stand out
Different hues

I like the original background colour so lets change the platform instead

Feedback
This is the feedback form I made to see what people thought of the game: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdMupG-hiY90E6UM0tU6DBHdcnIvX9slOpQJFzOHsl67Hgtkg/viewform?usp=dialog
There was a big challenge here because the gameplay link stopped working at school and I couldn’t get other people to play it.
One thing I did was make a gameplay video with Melanie to send to people so they could at least see what it was like
