AR – Unit 2: Part D

When all of the entries were in, I had to judge the pictures to pick a winner. This is the criteria that I used:

  • How well the drawing captures character.
  • The amount of detail in the drawing.
  • How clean the drawing looks.

At the bottom of this page you can see how I worked with others and responded to feedback along the way.

The Winner of the Competition is:

Alice – Toad

The shortlisted pictures are:

Second Place – Alice – Bunnies

Working with Others and responding to feedback

I had to work with my teacher Melanie to put the newsletter together. I also had to respond the feedback as the competition went along.

Here are the emails between me, my mum and my teachers. Pauline and Melanie are teachers at my school and Julia is my mum.

Tuesday 12th May

Hi Melanie,
I am working on my mask at the moment. After I finished I would like to work on the leadership project. Can you send me the worksheet for the leadership project please.thank you.

Aidan

Friday 15th May

Hi Aidan,
I know you are focussing on other subjects but if you would like to work on your Arts Award today there are still two things you could do:
1) Try to start making your masks at home with found materials. This doesn’t mean you can’t make the masks again when we are back at school. You could think of this as a prototype (a practice version)
2) Think of an Arts Challenge that I could put into the next newsletter. It should be a task that is fun and easy for students and teachers to complete at home. You could use Google to help you.
Melanie

Dear Pauline,

I had a chat with Aidan and he just wanted to tell Melanie that he had an idea for the arts challenge.  Everyone could draw a quick 5 minute portrait of someone in their families or one of their pets.

Also, would you mind letting Melanie know that I have ordered some art materials for Aidan’s mask and once they arrive Aidan will start making it.

Julia

Hi Julia,
Great, that is a fantastic idea from Aidan for our challenge, also please do let me know if there is any art materials Treasure House can provide we can get them delivered.
Melanie will be thrilled I will let her know.
Best wishes,
Pauline Wiltshire

Hi Julia,
Thanks for getting in touch. That is a great idea for an art challenge and I will put it into next week’s newsletter and encourage everyone to have a go. That’s great news about the art materials too. I really look forward to seeing what he makes!
Have a lovely weekend,
Melanie

Friday 22nd May

Hi Treasure House Students,

I just wanted to say that I hope you have a relaxing half term. You have plenty of work from me that you could be getting along with so I won’t send any more for now. Remember that this is a good time to practice your drawing, you might like to try Aidan’s challenge of drawing a family member or pet!  Melanie

Hi Aidan,

Some of the teachers and students have asked for a little more guidance about the competition. Could you provide a few tips that we could put in this week’s newsletter? I was also wondering if you had any ideas about the prize?

All the best,

Melanie

Hi Melanie,

1: criteria Each of the 3 criteria will have a point system for me to use to pick the winner, but I don’t want to show the scores afterwards if that’s ok
How well the drawing captures character (1-10)The amount of detail in the drawing (not too much stress on this as they only had 5 minutes)(1-5)How clean the drawing looks (1-10)The drawing with the highest total score wins
2. Prizeso I had two ideas for thisEither 1st place getting a £10 gift voucher and second getting a £5 bag of healthy snacksOr just a 1st place prize of either a Argos voucher or a snack bag for £15

3. Drawing tips
1. Try to control your lines2. Vary your line thickness3. Mix up shading techniques

Friday 3rd July

Hi Aidan,

Thanks for sending your shortlisted pictures on Tuesday.

The only thing I wanted to ask was for the competition winner!

Can you check that the shortlist is correct and if it is, tell me who you think should be the ultimate winner?
All the best,
Melanie

Hi Melanie

I pick first place as ‘Toad’ and second bunnies. Please can you pass this message on to Alice:

Congratulations for winning the competition! I chose your drawing as the winner because it had a lot of detail and had character too.
